The BMW M5 Touring is PHAT

The latest long-roof M5 is one of the most superficially desirable new cars on sale.

The BMW M5 Touring is PHAT

THEY SAY: "With a fresh interpretation of the signature M design for high-performance cars, the new BMW M5 Touring clearly expresses its racing-car-inspired character."

WE SAY: BMW's new M5 wagon (sorry, Touring) is easily the sexiest BMW on sale today – although depending on who you ask, that isn't saying much – and one of the most superficially desirable new cars out right now. Though would I have one over an Audi RS 6 or BMW's own non-hybrid M3 Touring? I'm not so sure.

What I am sure of, however, is that the M5 Touring will be fast. Very fast. With 535kW (727PS) and 1000Nm (737lb-ft) on tap, I'd bet a fiver that BMW's acceleration estimates are actually rather conservative.

Then again, it may well need that immense power to overcome its considerable heft, because this beefy wagon's weight figure is comparable to a neutron star. When BMW refer to the Touring's "racing-car-inspired character", it's certainly not to say that it's a stripped-out track machine. Lucky it's a looker – this thing is phat with a 'ph'. For those unaware, that's a very good thing for it to be.
